Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is an ancient and revered hands on healing practice that promotes and accelerates the healing and balancing of body, mind, and spirit. It is not a religion or religious system, and in no way contradicts any individual religious beliefs. The Japanese word Reiki translates as Universal Life Force Energy. It is the simple and gentle transfer of this energy that encourages the body’s ability to heal physical and emotional ailments, as well as opening the mind and spirit to the cause of pain and illness. After undergoing the process of Reiki attunements, the practitioner becomes able to channel and direct the energy through her hands. A Reiki treatment is often experienced as relaxing and meditative. The receiver lies in a comfortable position. There is no need to disrobe as the energy moves through clothing and even casts.
During this time the practitioner allows her hands to rest on or slightly above the recipient in a number of positions corresponding to the body’s major energy centers (or chakras). The recipient has only to be open to accepting the energy, and draws in the amount needed to activate healing and release of energy blocks. Many sense a feeling of warmth emanating from the practitioner’s hands as the energy is drawn.
